Welcome to the 29th Annual Graduate Research Conference (GRC), to be held on March, 23-24, 2023. As a multi-disciplinary conference, there is something for everybody at the 2023 GRC. The conference is open for all students and the public to attend and there is no registration required or fee. Hope to see you there!
The Graduate Research Conference (GRC) is a conference designed for graduate students, by the Graduate Students Association (GSA). It provides an opportunity for students from different faculties and departments to come together and share their ideas. The mandate of the GRC is to provide a forum for graduate students to present their research in a supportive environment, gain presentation skills, and develop links with the greater graduate community.

The Graduate Research Conference has been an annual tradition for the past 29 years. The GRC has welcomed prominent keynote speakers over the years and is a popular event among all UNB students.

Keynote Speaker and Workshops
Opening Prayers by Elder Jean Bartibogue
Elder Jean Bartibogue is a Mi’kmaq woman from the community of Esgenoôpetitj and a clan mother of the Jagej (Lobster) Clan. She has spent nearly four decades immersing herself in traditional wisdom and in knowledge of cultural teachings and ceremonies. As the UNB Kcicihtuwinut (Knowledge Carrier-in-Residence), Elder Jeannie tends to the spiritual and cultural needs of Indigenous students and is committed to helping others within a framework of traditional Wabanaki teachings.
Mayor Kate Rogers
Kate Rogers was elected as Mayor of Fredericton in May 2021 and is the first women to serve in that role.
She chairs the Fredericton Affordable Housing Committee, is a member of the UNB Board of Governors and serves as an ex officio member of all City of Fredericton Standing Committees.
Rogers was first elected to City Council in May 2012 and again in May 2016. She served as Deputy Mayor for the City of Fredericton for a two-year term beginning in May 2016. During her time on Council, she has sat on and chaired numerous City Standing and Advisory committees and has served as Council representative on the Planning Advisory Committee, the Preservation Review Board, Downtown Fredericton Inc., and the regional service commission.
Rogers is a graduate of UNB’s Masters program in Political Science and has built her career through leadership roles in the non-profit sector, arts administration, and policy research and development. She is a past Executive Director for the Fredericton Community Foundation, Inc., the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, and the New Brunswick Crafts Council, and Managing Director of the NB Social Policy Research Network. A life-long community volunteer, Rogers is a past President of Omista Credit Union, a founding co-chair of the Fredericton Arts Alliance, and a Lorans Scholar mentor to name a few.
A life-long resident Fredericton, Rogers and her husband, Mike Wolfe, have lived in Ward 11 for over 22 years with their two daughters, Eliza and Iris.
Dr. Yogi Sehgal
Yogi Sehgal was born and raised in Ottawa. He completed undergrad and Medical School in Ottawa (way back in 1996) and completed a Rural Family Medicine residency in Northwestern Ontario in 1998 via McMaster’s Family Medicine North program (which is now part of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine). He started out doing rural medicine locums in various parts of Ontario and BC, settling in Sioux Lookout, a mostly indigenous remote community in Northwestern Ontario from 2000 to 2010, doing a full-service practice, including Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics, Palliative Care, Stress Testing and more.
Relocating to Fredericton in 2010 with his wife, Lynne, who is a nurse practitioner, he started here as a family physician at the Centre de Santé Noreen-Richard, improving access to health care for the francophone population of the Fredericton region, while doing part-time Emergency Medicine. In 2014, after the birth of his second child, he switched to full time Emergency Medicine and received the Certificate of Added Competence in Emergency Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2019. He is now the father of three kids: Ori, Kéo and Talika, ages 10, 9 and 7. His special interests include Evidence-Based Medicine, advocacy (especially for rural and remote medicine), music (he used to play in a pop punk band called Overmedicated, but that’s a story for another time), hockey, cross country skiing and reading among other things. He also has been doing the physician scheduling for the Emergency Department in Fredericton and Oromocto, so has been acutely aware of and involved in the current physician and nursing shortages. He looks forward to retiring one day, but in the mean time, would like to have a functional health care system to attend to his family and his community when needed…
Damon Goodwill
Damon is responsible for implementing the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation’s strategy, as set out by the board of directors, and providing leadership, and direction to the team at the Foundation.
With 25+ years in healthcare working within Industry, as an international HealthCare Consultant and on several boards, Damon has extensive experience in coordinating complex, unconventional partnerships that have advanced patient outcomes across North America and in the EU.
His previous work in partnership with the NBHRF has helped improve the lives of injured veterans, increased research capacity in New Brunswick and has had significant positive impact on health system changes that were successfully translated across Canada. He is driven to connect research and innovation across the province and to work with others both nationally and internationally to advance a healthy population, a high performing health system and a vibrant knowledge economy through health research and innovation.

Guidelines
- The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
- All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
- The text is single-spaced; uses a 14-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- Abstract (Maximum of 250 -300 Words):
- Include primary author and co-authors (format: Williams TG and Rowes JK).
- Abstract should include a brief introduction, description of research methodology, and results to be discussed.
- Please use Single Column format for Abstract

- Include references, if any.
- All abstracts are peer-reviewed. The authors’ names are removed from submission, with “Author” and year used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of authors’ name, paper title, etc before being sent to the reviewers.
- If submitting to peer review, all Microsoft Office documents (including Supplementary Files) have been saved by going to File and selecting Save As; clicking Tools (or Options in a Mac); clicking Security; selecting “Remove personal information from file properties on save”; clicking Save.
- *Please note: You are applying for a conference that is meant for various departments and academic areas, the general public needs to be able to attend and understand.
- *Please note: when applying for “Both” in the presentation preference on the submission form, you are committing your time to do an oral presentation and a poster presentation.
- *Please note: Your abstract can be of a project completed or a project in progress. If you have any questions please contact grc@unbgsa.ca
- General presentation notes:
- Standard oral presentation slot will be approximately 15 mins including time for questions.
- Poster dimensions are 48” x 36” (standard conference poster size).
- Talks that cannot fit into the oral presentation program will automatically be considered for poster presentations.

Eligibility
Students must be registered in a Master’s or PhD program, be in good standing, and have made substantial progress on their research and analysis.
Presentations must be based on the primary research the student has conducted in his/her graduate program. Students who have already defended their thesis but have not yet graduated are eligible. Students in course-based programs, visiting students, exchange students, and students on leave are eligible.
Students must present virtually, agree to be photographed and video-taped, and allow the recordings to be made public.
